Rutgers Urban Forestry Program Will Host the 2019 NJ State Arbor Day Celebration!
Come join the NJ Forest Service, the NJ Community Forestry Council, the NJ Tree Foundation, and the Rutgers Urban Forestry Program on Friday, April 26, 2019 to celebrate efforts across the state to grow healthy, safe, and resilient urban and community forests!
Rutgers University was selected to host this year's event, to celebrate the granting of initial candidacy to two programs at Rutgers University: the Urban Forestry Track in the Environmental Planning and Design Major, and the Forest Ecology and Management Track in the Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources Major by the Society of American Foresters' (SAF) Committee on Accreditation (COA). Candidacy indicates that a program has achieved initial recognition and is progressing toward SAF accreditation.
9am – 11am Portable Sawmill Demonstration & Training
(2 NJUCF CEUs available)
12pm Ceremonial Tree Planting
The ceremony will include winner of the NJUCF and Rutgers Urban Forestry campus photo contest - My Tree, My Campus, recognition of milestone Tree City USA communities (1st year, 10 years, 20 years, 30 years, and 40 years), presentation of the J. Sterling Morton Award, and keynote address by Dr. Jason Grabosky of the Rutgers Urban Forestry Program.
The Sawmill Demonstration will feature an oak tree that was part of the Rutgers canopy for over 150 years. It was removed recently due to declining health and will be milled into boards to be used for benches, tables, boardwalks, and other building projects across campus.
The theme for the Arbor Day ceremony this year is "From Seed to Saw." In the weeks leading up to Arbor Day, over 60 hickory trees representing 7 different species will be planted on campus. This will enable a teaching collection for the future and begin the slow process of replacing the environmental services that the oak tree provided while it was healthy.
The ceremony and sawmill demonstration will take place along Dudley Road across from the Rutgers Institute for Food, Nutrition and Health (61 Dudley Road), adjacent to Parking Lot #97. Park in lot #97 or lot #98B and register your vehicle at this Rutgers Event Parking link.
We hope that you will join us to celebrate trees, show your support as we work toward accreditation through the Society of American Foresters for our programs at Rutgers, and congratulate all those who are being recognized for their achievements toward building healthy, safe and resilient urban & community forests!Link to Location Map for Arbor Day Ceremony with Parking (380k PDF)
